Food Safety Advice for People with a Kidney Transplant.

Sarah Williams (Lead Dietician)

. Large ice cubes have less surface area than smaller ones so have less fluid.

. Try to wait for the ice to melt rather than crunching through it.

. Have a drink after your meal as you will be fuller and so the desire to drink will be less.

. Try to avoid foods high in sugar as they make you very thirsty.

. Many large supermarkets sell small 150ml bottles of fizz which give you the fizz without the volume.

. Measure out your fluid allowance for the day and every time you have fluid empty some out so you can see what you have left.

. Try to never finish a drink.

. Keep a record of entire fluid intake over the day and the time you had them.

. Try and keep drinks out of arms reach.

. Use the smallest cup you can find.

. Sip don't gulp.

If out see if you can share a drink.

. If you are planning on going out, drink a little less the day before.

. If your mouth gets dry, brush your teeth or rinse with mouthwash.

. Create a planned schedule of when you are likely to want a drink, such as after a meal.

. Do some physical activity especially if it makes you sweat.

. Keep busy to avoid thinking about drink.

. Eat a few grapes or cut up a piece of fruit which you leave in the fridge.

. Suck on sugar free sweets or chew sugar free gum.

. Remember to include the fluid in rice, custard, jelly and soup.

The government has issued guidance following an increase of Hepatitis E being reported. This has been sourced back to problems with pork products in particular.

The dieticians would like to advise that all meat products e.g. sausages and poultry eaten by people with a kidney transplant should be thoroughly cooked. It is advised that undercooked and rare (pink) meat products should be avoided.

Lastly it is advised that raw fish should also be avoided.
